I was thrilled to be asked to be a Judge on Kirstie Alsopp’s Channel 4 series ‘Kirstie’s Handmade Christmas’. I was chosen to be a Judge for three contests - Toy, Gift and Pet Gift. I was also asked to create a few projects under each of these titles to get Kirstie to participate on.

Toy

I’ve designed and made literally hundreds of toys over the past fifteen years so this was a fun challenge. I wanted to create a toy that would appeal to young children and wanted to include my love of screen printing fabric. It also needed to be a toy that Kirstie would be able to make. I created a hand cut paper stencil to create a toy Santa.

Below are some of the step by step photos and a toy, cushion and Christmas stocking from the same stencil.

Gift

I chose quite a simple gift to make for my ‘Judge Craft’ with Kirsty as we only had a matter of minutes. I designed a simple ‘Reindeer cushion’ that used pieces of felt. It reminded me of the Fuzzy Felt pieces I used to play with as a child. Below are some other examples of cushions I created using the same technique - I used bonda web on the reverse of the felt and ironed on the pieces before adding a simple stitch.

Pet Gift

Being asked to design a simple Pet Gift was a challenge to me as I didn’t want to try to create something that I’d seen before. I also wanted it to be a gift that anyone could create, a gift that could be made from old cardboard boxes and that could be recycled once it had been used a lot. (and the novelty had worn off!) I also wanted to add an element of humour to it!

I came up with the idea of adapting simple cardboard boxes into little play houses for small animals that would be decorated with my simple bold monochrome illustrations. The smallest house would be for a hamster, or a hamster bed!

Below are some of my creations.

Below are some of the step by step photos I created whilst making the various houses.

If you’d like to view the Episodes above on TV, I appeared in Episode 5 (Toy), 7 (Gift) and the Pet Gift.

You can find further details here. The production company are called Raise The Roof Productions.

Here are a few photos below that the crew kindly took for me . (Toys left and pet gifts middle)
